A telephonic interview round is usually the first live screening stage after a candidate’s CV/profile has been shortlisted. It is commonly conducted by an HR recruiter or talent-acquisition representative and often lasts around 15–30 minutes, although the exact format varies by company and role. Its main purpose is to confirm that the candidate broadly matches the vacancy before arranging more detailed technical, managerial, or HR interviews.
How the telephonic interview process works
1. Candidate is shortlisted: The recruiter reviews the CV against the job description—experience, qualifications, skills, location and other basic requirements.
2. Candidate is contacted: HR normally calls, emails, or messages the candidate, introduces the opportunity, confirms interest and arranges a suitable time for the screening call.
3. Recruiter introduces the opportunity: At the beginning of the scheduled call, the recruiter generally introduces themselves and briefly explains the company, position, department, work location and major responsibilities.
4. Candidate introduction: A common opening is “Tell me about yourself.” The recruiter may ask the candidate to summarize their current position, previous experience, important responsibilities and relevant skills.
5. Profile verification: HR compares what the candidate says with the CV. Questions may cover current/previous employer, designation, total and relevant experience, education, major responsibilities and reason for seeking a change.
6. Basic suitability questions: The recruiter can ask why the candidate wants the position, what they know about the company, whether their experience matches the role, and sometimes a few basic job-related questions. The purpose usually isn't a complete technical assessment; deeper evaluation generally happens in later rounds.
7. Employment conditions: HR may confirm current compensation/CTC, expected compensation, notice period, earliest joining date, current/preferred location, willingness to relocate or travel, and availability for shifts, hybrid or onsite work where relevant.
8. Communication assessment: Throughout the conversation, HR is also observing whether the candidate communicates clearly, listens properly, answers professionally and can explain their experience consistently.
9. Candidate questions: The candidate is normally given an opportunity to ask about the position, team, interview stages or other relevant aspects of the opportunity.
10. Screening decision: After the call, HR records the candidate's responses and determines whether the profile should move forward. If shortlisted, the recruiter then coordinates the next interview round, which could be an online assessment, technical interview, hiring-manager interview, video interview or face-to-face interview.
